Alternating between hanging out in the kids’ pool and the buffet table takes its toll on the psyche and eventually you can’t stand it anymore, a quick googling later and a rental car was booked and we decided to go on a trip.
Our first visit was to Las Palmas and although we took a walk and lunch in town, it was the Aquarium that attracted us. Quite expensive admission and perhaps not the coolest we have visited but well worth it to sing “Arne alligator” to their Siamese crocodile and look at other fish. They had a clearly impressive panoramic window to the large aquarium as you can see in the video clip below.
After a good night’s sleep, we set off straight after breakfast towards the interior of the island and the environment immediately became both more enjoyable and more beautiful. The road wound its way through deep ravines and valleys and is nothing for the nervous driver. Unlike many other southern European countries, however, you don’t see any crosses or memorials along the roadside here, whether this is due to fewer accidents or just that they haven’t adopted that culture, I leave it to chance.
We started the day with a visit and a look down into the Bandama volcanic crater, about 200m deep and about 1km wide, it was awesome to see, since we were there so early there weren’t many people either. Then we continued on the narrow, winding mountain roads to check out Teror, Firgas and on the way home we saw a really impressive church in Gothic style in Arucas, unfortunately it was closed so we couldn’t go inside but if you’re passing by, they’re all recommended, especially Teror was really nice to visit with its nice facades and balconies in their cozy city center.
